A statistical look at Man Utd’s 8-2 victory over Arsenal

Aug. 30th 2011

Red Devils superior in all departments

A commanding performance by Manchester United saw the Red Devils beat Arsenal 8-2 at Old Trafford – a result which is destined to be remembered by both sets of supporters for quite a while yet. Using FourFourTwo’s Stats Zone application, I decided to take a look at the match from a statistical standpoint. Although an 8-2 drubbing would suggest that United were superior in all areas, it would be interesting to put some numbers to the key performance areas.

It is important to note that although Arsenal had a numerical advantage in central midfield, the performances from United’s centre backs as well as Tom Cleverley and more importantly Wayne Rooney nullified Arsenal’s ability to exploit this advantage.

Looking at the graphic which demonstrates the players’ influence on the match, we can see that United had more players who were more involved – receiving and playing more passes, whereas Arsenal were overly reliant on Rosicky and Ramsey. By the way, how is the move to Arsenal turning out for you, Aaron? It is also quite striking how much more involved United’s centre back pairing of Evans and Jones was compared to Arsenal’s Koscielny and Djourou.

I found the superlative performances of both Smalling and Jones quite pleasing as just three weeks ago, a deluded Arsenal fan voiced his opinion that they were not as good as Koscielny and Djourou. Their comical defending for Welbeck’s goal and throughout the entire match firmly planted many Arsenal fans back into the realm of reality.

Rampant Reds Romp the Arse 8-2

Manchester United mauled a depleted and tired Arsenal side 8-2 to go top of the league. A hamstring injury to Danny Welbeck proved to be the only negative on a glorious day at Old Trafford which saw a Rooney hat-trick as well as a spectacular brace from Ashley Young.

VIDEOS: All the goals from Man Utd Reserves 6 – 0 Swansea Reserves

Aug. 26th 2011

Reds’ reserves romp to 6-0 win

United racked up a 6-0 success against Swansea in the opening home Barclays Premier Reserves League encounter at Altrincham’s Moss Lane with Darren Fletcher getting another 90 minutes under his belt.

The Reds took little time to open the scoring as an incisive move allowed Davide Petrucci to pick out his fellow Italian Federico Macheda for a simple finish. Paul Pogba doubled the lead when drifting into the box from his right-wing station to display an outstanding first touch to set up a clinical drive past Jose Moreira. The home side were in the ascendancy with Pogba showing flashes that oozed class and Mame Biram Diouf looking sharp in attack.

Diouf stole possession to belt a shot just wide and a goal seemed certain when Petrucci’s pass sprung the offside trap to release Larnell Cole but Macheda passed up a tap-in from the winger’s centre, instead screwing wide. Pogba picked up a yellow card but there were plenty of positives about his performance as his perfectly-timed pass fed Diouf but Moreira saved well. Another Pogba cross saw Petrucci bamboozle Moreira only to see his finish blocked. However, a third goal did arrive in first-half injury time when Diouf stormed through to calmly find the net.

The second period brought more one-way traffic and Diouf got on the scoresheet again with a similar strike, haring in on goal and shooting home despite taking a painful knock. The Senegalese striker passed up two opportunities to seal his hat-trick when blazing over and forcing a stunning save from Moreira following a Pogba cross.

But substitute Jesse Lingard got in on the act when exploding a right-foot volley into the net with seven minutes remaining after intelligent play by Will Keane. And Keane, another substitute, strolled onto a Diouf flick in stoppage time to stroke a relaxed finish wide of Moreira to complete the rout.

United: Ben Amos; Marnick Vermijl, Michael Keane, Ezekiel Fryers, Sean McGinty; Paul Pogba, Darren Fletcher, Davide Petrucci (Cofie 79), Larnell Cole (Jesse Lingard 69); Federico Macheda (Will Keane 46), Mame Biram Diouf.

Man Utd’s youngest premier league starting elevens

Aug. 23rd 2011

Starting XI vs Hull 2009 still the youngest

There seems to be some debate as to whether the youngest starting XI Sir Alex has fielded in the premier league was against Bolton in 1995 or against Hull in 2009. A look at the team sheets and with the aide of an online calculator, it would seem that the youngest Man Utd team ever fielded in the premier league was indeed versus Hull in 2009, followed by last night’s starting eleven against Tottenham.

VIDEO: Tom Cleverley’s performance vs Man City

Aug. 11th 2011

Energetic midfield performance was a breath of fresh air

Tom Cleverley was a second half substitute for Manchester United in Sunday’s Community Shield victory over the bitters and impressed with his energetic performance. Cleverley’s introduction resulted in a more dynamic and direct play in the centre of the park as well as some very good link-up play.

In fact, United’s second half performance was one of the better team performances in recent memory and there haven’t been too many recent matches where United bossed midfield so completely. Cleverley’s hustle as well as forward-looking approach were a breath of fresh air and I really look forward to seeing more of that this season.

Anyway….. I enjoyed Cleverley’s performance versus the bitters and hope you do too.
