Photos: The 2010/11 Season in Pictures | League Champions for the 19th Time (Part 1)

22/07/11 9:35 PM

What an emotional roller coaster!

Manchester United had finally done it! They had knocked Liverpool off their bloody perch by winning a record 19th top flight league title. Sir Alex had achieved an incredible milestone and the team’s accomplishments appear even more amazing when one considers all the setbacks it had faced: from want-a-way strikers and injured wingers to ridiculous refereeing decisions and  bullshit punishments handed out by the corrupt FA.

All-in-all it was an incredibly marvelous achievement and a fantastic way to say goodbye to the many iconic players who left the club during and at the end of the season: Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, Edwin van der Sar, John O’Shea and Wes Brown.

The following is the first part of my retrospective look at the 2010/11 season in pictures and videos. If there are moments and/or pictures you feel should be included, please leave a comment with a link if possible.

Enjoy and keep the red flag flying high!

Pre-Season

Zoran Tosicjoins CSKA Moscow

Another bizarre transfer gone wrong. Will we ever know what really happened? Adem Ljajic had been resented to the media and then not signed, while Zoran Tosic was never given a fair crack of the whip before being shipped off to CSKA Moscow.

Following the departures of Tom Heaton to Cardiff City, as well as Ron-Robert Zieler to Hannover, Manchester United also confirmed that Febian Brandy, Sam Hewson and Scott Moffatt were released.

Vidic commits!

Vida signs new contract. The best piece of business Manchester United pulled off during the transfer window was to secure the services of Nemanja Vidic who had been wooed by Real Madrid. The Serbian rock signed a new 4-year deal to the delight of reds everywhere.

Antonio Valancia dislocates ankle

Tony V suffered a horrendous injury against Rangers which would prove costly to the team as we missed his drive and tenacity, but it also allowed Nani to blossom in the right wing position.

Berbatov hat-trick vs Liverpool

Dimitar Berbatov endeared himself to United fans all over the world by scoring a fantastic hat-trick vs Liverpool

Sir Alex goes missing

Fergie was missing for United Carling Cup match against Scuntorpe and his absence was explained by claiming he was scouting Valencia. Only problem is he was scouting Valencia with goalkeeping coach Eric Steele. I copped a bit of flak on twitter because i knew he was scouting David De Gea. Looks like I was right ;)

The Bombshell: Wayne Rooney announced he doubted the club’s ambitions and wanted to leave before making a dramatic u-turn. The timing of the announcement was particularly infuriating as it was made on the eve of a Champions League match.

Bebe scores first goal for Manchester United in a cup match vs Wolves

I might be a cynic but maybe the Glazers thought they’d try to look less evil by doing a good deed, but whatever the reason, you can’t deny it was nice of the club to buy Nobby Stiles’ World Cup winner’s medal and several other items during an auction.

Manchester United had to come back from several two-goal defecits throughout the season and against Villa, Kiko Macheda and captain Nemanja Vidic came to the rescue.

Welcome back, Wayne!

Wayne Rooney played his first match after threatening to leave the club against Rangers and secured all three points with a penalty at Ibrox.

Epson buy Man Utd!

It what proved to be a classic Internet cock-up, a poorly-translated Japanese article was used by an Austrian newspaper to announce that Man Utd had been bought by Japanese conglomerate Epson. Days later a sponsorship deal between United and Epson was announced.

Old Trafford welcome Chilean Miners

Sir Bobby Charlton came from a mining family and saw to it that the 33 Chilean Miners who had suffered the ordeal of being trapped for 68 days had the experience of a lifetime by visiting Manchester and United.

A true Manchester United legend, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, ended his 14-year relationship with the club to beome manager of his former club Molde.

Chelsea match postponed

I was livid at the time and convinced it was a ploy by Roman. Chelsea were in poor form and United would have beaten them. The match was post-poned due to bad weather and when the match was finally played David Luiz scored – a player bought in the January transfer window – and commited two founs which should have seen him receive a second yellow card, but Martin Atkinson was earning his cheque from Roman.

Anders Lindegaard joins United

Qatar Holdings linked to Man Utd takeover. It wouldn’t materialize though and the Qataris instead began investing in French club PSG.

Edwin announces retirement

The man who stopped our goalkeeping blues when he joined from Fulham and who made one of the most memorable saves in club history announced his intention to retire from football at the end of the season.
