Man Utd Squad List – Fergie does NOT have to omit Hargreaves

31/08/10 4:19 PM

United only have 24 senior players who need to be registered

A few days ago, Fergie admitted he was unsure of whether he should include Owen Hargreaves in his 25-man squad for the first half of this season.

“I only have one issue really – whether I can afford to allot one of the 25 places to Owen Hargreaves as he continues to battle for full fitness,” Ferguson told United Review

The comments made by SAF were then picked up by several news sites and then debated by several Man Utd blogs and forum, but the story is actually not an issue at all.

According to the new regulations implemented by the premier league, each club has to is allowed to register 25 players over the age of 21 with a maximum of 17 players over the age of 21, who are NOT home-grown. Each club is allowed to supplement that “A-list” of 25 players with an UNLIMITED number of players under the age of 21.

The key is that the age of the player is based on his age as of the 1st of January in the year the season starts. In this season’s case, their age on the 1st of January 2010.

“A home-grown player will be defined as one who, irrespective of his nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to the Football Association or the Football Association of Wales for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons or 36 months prior to his 21st birthday (or the end of the Season during which he turns 21).‬‪

Clubs will be able to supplement their squads with unlimited additional players under the age of 21 on 1st January in the year in which the season commences.

“Clubs will have to declare their 25 at the end of August when the window shuts and then again at the end of January.”

This means that Manchester United only have 24 senior players in the “A-list” INCLUDING Owen Hargreaves and could even buy an additional player by transfer deadline today and including the new signing WITHOUT having to omit Owen Hargreaves.

The fact that Sir Alex has sold Foster, as well as Tosic and loaned out Diouf for the entire season, means that even if he doesn’t buy a player today, he can still buy a player over the age of 21 in the January window WITHOUT having to drop Hargreaves then, so the story is really a non-starter.

I have added Manchester United’s squad list as a permanent page to this blog:

Hmm, wonder if we are going to go with just the 24? So many of the younger players are home grown too!

I don’t think it wise for Fergie to start the season with 24 senior players when he can name one more player or potentially two more and drop Hargo. Other big clubs are loaning out or selling players to trim their squad and we’re relying on Cleverley, Smalling, Rafael, Obertan and Bbebe (ffs) to bolster ours. It doesn’t add up. Something tells me Fergie has something in the works. Rodwell maybe? He’d fit the new transfer policy.

I totally agree. Why this should be an issue? We have only 24 player over 25 even with Hago. It’s so strange!!!
